Pros and cons

This year and until and if I decide on a specialty to pursue my working life as a doctor will consist of rotations. One rotation is 10 weeks long and is called a "term".

For me,
Term 1: General Medicine
Term 2: General Surgery
Term 3: Rehabilitation
Term 4: Rural Emergency
Term 5: Emergency

Every term, my workplace will change as will the working hours/shifts, specific duties, job description, staff and bosses.

What's good about this system:
1. Get exposure to different fields of medicine and learn a wide variety of things
2. Won't get too bored that easily as a rotation only lasts 3 months
3. You can say goodbye to the boss/nurses after 3 months (which is good if you didn't like them)
4. Won't get stuck in a rut doing the same thing at the same place

What's not good about this system:
1. Lots of people to have to befriend
2. Have to get to know new people and new ward practices (each ward is different to how it operates!) every 3 months - lecehnya... and just when you've just gotten used to the current ward/staff
3. Very difficult to arrange childcare
4. Very difficult to plan anything (holidays, flights, events) in advance because you never know what your roster is until close to the start of the rotation
5. Not quite easy to budget either because working hours will differ; the pay will be different each rotation too.
6. Your bosses keep changing and thus have to bodek more people and learn more people's modus operandi!

Currently: Pening kepala memikirkan childcare arrangements for our next rotation. Surgery morning shifts start at 7am. Childcare centre tu bukak pukul 7.30! And if we both start at 7am..adoi camne lah. We requested a more childcare friendly shift arrangement (one of us gets morning shift, the other gets afternoon shift)...tapi tak tau la kan.. besides, full time 5 days at the childcare centre costs more than our house rent!!
Hmm.. doa aje la
