Picture story

Roster : a fortnightly schedule of who is working on what days and for which hours. Quite flexible to switch among ourselves. Every fortnight there is a rotation in some of the senior doctors' timetable. Every shift I work with a different registrar. After 8 weeks I have gotten to know a lot of them and like them a lot.

Pigeon hole: gives a sense of belonging somewhat. Despite my misspelt name.

Typical lunch: something instant and easy to make. I'm too lazy to cook in the early hours of the day. Nothing that can go bad if not eaten should there not be an opportunity for lunchtime. I always bring a can of baked beans or Campbell's soup or a tub of hummus or some pre-fried sausages or fish fingers. Sometimes I bring frozen meat/chicken pies to heat up for lunch. There's bread and milk in the fridge and margarine, peanut butter and cereals in the pantry in the doctors common room that we can take.

Every day there would be leftover desserts in the ward because some of the patient can't eat sweet things (diabetic diet etc)...so we would frequently eat the muffins, cupcakes or scones hee hee.On Wednesday there is free breakfast because of Grand Round (lovely mouth watering pastries!!!) and on Thursdays we have free lunch because of our mandatory tutorial (sandwiches - nice but a bit boring getting the same thing every week now).

Common room: A sanctuary only for doctors. A place to escape the mind cluttering demands of the ward, have lunch, relax or have a chat. No access to FB though from the hospital computer. Hehehe. On Friday afternoons there is provided lunch of pizza and pastas. Then this room will be full as ravenous doctors pick up 3-4 slices of pizza each hehehe. Sape lambat nanti habis!!!

Residents quarters: This is a corridor full of small rooms with beds and cabinets for on call residents to sleep in at night. During the day we use these rooms to pray or have a nap (I usually have naps on the weekend shift hee hee coz there are usually not much work to do).

Junior doctors' essentials: Stethoscope, pager, name tag (which is also a swipe card), pensssss (God help you if you lose your pen), tape (I've learnt multiple uses for the tape) and clipboard/file to carry patient lists and numerous important pieces of paper that would be frequently used. Easier to carry them around than having to ulang alik and find them.

Patient history: this is a folder of reports of things that happen from presentation to discharge.Some patients only have a few pieces of paper. Some have up to 5 volumes!! A junior doctor's job is to scribe everything during the ward rounds, and every single phone call received, patient's progress and problems. Have legible handwriting and people will be happy. Not only that, if handwriting is big and clear people will notice it and actually read it. There's always miscommunication when people don't read other people's notes in the history! But sometimes if the writing is bad, ink very faint, people tend to ignore these notes. Pointless for the person writing the note in the first place!
