The Real Deal

Layth & Yusuf
Alhamdulillah we had the opportunity to attend another Al-Kauthar course titled "The Real Deal". The subject matter was Fiqh of Muamalah (Transactions).

I've never been a fan of finance/economy but surprisingly I didn't sleep at all during this course. (Maybe coz kene keep an eye on Layth at the same time).

This time they provided us mothers with comfortable seating outside the lecture theatre with full audio and video. Didn't have to hush hush the kids anymore.

Learnt lots.
Basic principle of muamalah is: Everything is HALAL unless proven otherwise by Al-Quran, As-Sunnah and consensus of the scholars.
So we learn what is haram and all other things are permissible.

Ummi & other mommies sat outside
Some of the stuff we learnt:
1. What is a valid business transaction
2. What were the rulings of modern daily transactions that we have e.g. credit card, mortgage, lay-by, discount cards
3. What is riba' (eye opener!)
4. What are permissible business/trades

Things that made me go "Oh! Didn't know that":

1. It is not permissible to buy/sell the Quran. (I was going "What?? So how?" in my mind). Okay..so what is permissible is only the cost of printing, distributing and delivering the Quran. No one is allowed to make profit from selling the Quran.

2. Plants grown from impure manure are themselves impure and unlawful to trade therefore unlawful to eat. Animals that are fed impure things are also impure and unlawful to trade/eat even though the animal was originally a lawful animal to eat.

3. Lending, charity and being a guarantor are recommended acts in Islam and therefore a person is not allowed (haram) to expect or demand reward (monetary or non-monetary) for it. If the borrower, recipient of the charity wants to give something as a gift, this is allowed.

4. It is not recommended to give loans to family members to avoid any riba' no matter how small.
Imam Abu Hanifah would not even take shade (from the sun) under the roof of a person whom he had lent money to for fear the shade would be an "extra" /increase over the amount of money he had lended to that person thus constituting riba'.

5. Riba's is not just bank interest/credit card etc. Buying gold with a credit card is riba'. Riba' is when a riba' item (i.e. gold, silver, currency, food items which can be stored and traded by weight) is traded unequally.

-----

Layth made lots of friends during the course. On the second day, more of the mothers brought their children along so there were a few kids running around. They played tag, ran up and down the stairs, watched Fireman Sam DVD on my laptop, played police & robbers, hung from the staircase poles and other stuff.

At first I was quite apprehensive because the older kids were quite rough. The older ones kept calling Layth "The Baby". Like "Why do you want to play with the Baby?". They exploited Layth; making him the tag (all the time! ha ha!) who kept chasing everyone. But Layth was happy just to be able to play. And I was happy because I could concentrate on the lecture and happy because Layth wasn't scared of them anymore. I did have to check on them once in a while though. Especially if they suddenly became too quiet. Didn't want them to get on the lift and get lost on the 7th floor or something. Erkk!

Too exhausted for dinner

I want to comment on Layth more than your course..haha. Layth sounds like he is having the childhood that we all had. Ikut parents pergi program, main dengan kawan2. I'm sure, insyaAllah, when he grows up, it is these things that he will remember and would want to be in such a setting too. Lucky boy. :D

(And, so what is the ruling of the use of credicard?)

that's ok haha comment whatever you want.
yes i'm sure that's what prompted you the most because it reminded you/us about our childhood and the fun we had. i still remember running around the basement of Birmingham masjid. ha ha ha.

credit card is a riba' contract. even if one pays on time and avoids the interest, you still entered the contract with the willingness to pay riba'. but like all haram things, allowed if there is a need.

what if for convenience purpose? i don't incur interest on credit cards (don't have intention to), but somehow it's convenient plus paying for takaful is automatically credited from cc?

debit cards are allowed coz they take money from your own account.
credit cards make you pay interest (not gain interest) if you are late in payment kan. that is the riba' part.

depends on your conscience. if you feel comfortable with it and think it is a need. otherwise avoid it.

zidni- it's hard to comment.
basic thing is just because some scheme is named something doesn't mean it's exactly that/permissible
e.g. they changed the name of riba' to interest (faedah) i.e. something good but does not change the nature of it which is riba' and haram.

same with other "labels" to make things sound Islamic. It may be riba' disguised with another name.

So that's why it's hard to comment.
Say murabahah- if what the service providers describes is exactly that, then it is permissible. But if it sounds like riba' then it probably is riba'.

Cannot just give label to things. Need to investigate it yourself and decided (based on knowledge) whether it is indeed halal or not.

Therefore the conclusion is one has to have knowledge.
